The College of Arts, Sciences, and Education is committed to providing our students with increased accessibility to quality online courses and online degree programs. The Board of Governors 2025 Strategic Plan for Online Education forecasts a rapid growth in online education needs across the State of Florida. As a result, the online course development incentive was established to support the expansion and growth of online course offerings in our college.

1. COURSE ELIGIBILITY
Please review the course eligibility information below before submitting this form.
- Eligible courses must be NEW to the online modality (Mode: I) and have no history of being offered online (Mode: I) by any other instructor in the past. If you are unsure whether your proposed course has been offered online before, please email Wendy Sanchez, Director of Online Learning- CASE Dean's Office at wesanc@fiu.edu for confirmation.
-Eligible courses are usually associated with a fully online degree program and/or, due to demand, will be offered online multiple times throughout the academic year.
Note:
Courses that require minimal content development may not meet eligibility (e.g., internship, directed individual study, supervised research, graduate thesis, etc.). In addition, experimental courses, those that are offered on a trial basis, often prior to submitting the course for permanent status, are not eligible.
-
2. SCHEDULING EXPECTATIONS
After a proposal has been approved, the Dean’s office will verify that the course is scheduled in PantherSoft in the fully online modality as:
• Instruction Mode: I
• Location: 9002 (online) or 9007 (online live)
• Funding type must be either E&G (Tuition/DL fee assessed) or Self-Supporting/Market Rate
• Course must be listed as “active” and run an entire semester. If the course is canceled for any reason, the instructor will be eligible on the following semester that the course is successfully offered.
-
3. ONLINE COURSE DEVELOPMENT EXPECTATIONS:
FIU Online will assign an Instructional Designer to assist with the development of the new online course and provide guidance on the Panther High Quality process. The Dean’s office will review the online course development at the end of the semester it was offered (after grades have posted) to confirm the following:
• Online course was taught a full semester (not cancelled)
• Online course development is completed
• Design meets the Panther High Quality standards mandated for all new online courses (effective Summer 2020 per the SUS 2025 Strategic Plan for Online Education)
If a course does not meet any of the items listed above, the instructor will have one academic year to complete what is pending.
-
4. DEVELOPMENT INCENTIVE
The online development incentive will be issued at the end of the semester that the course is offered online (must have met the development requirements noted in step 4). If the pass rate was lower than 70%, the Dean’s office will determine if the incentive should be fully processed or partially processed pending a redevelopment plan to improve the average pass rate (this will be evaluated on a one-on-one basis). The incentive amount awarded is based on the course credits:
• 1 credit: $500
• 2 credits: $1000
• 3 or more credits: $1500
*As of Summer 2020, all new online courses are required to be developed with the Panther High Quality standards. Therefore, no additional compensation will be awarded after the course is issued the quality certification.
